What is continuous quality improvement?

CQI: Three-Word Definition

  • Continuous adjective / 1: marked by uninterrupted extension in space, time, or sequence
  • Quality noun: a degree of excellence; superiority in kind;
  • Improvement noun | 1: the act or process of improving; 2a: the state of being improved especially: enhanced value or excellence. 2b: an instance of such improvement: something that enhances value or excellence

Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) is a leadership philosophy and a systematic process that engages all members of an organization in the constant effort to improve.

In essence, CQI is an ongoing cycle of collecting data and using that data to make decisions to gradually improve program processes.

Core Principles

The CQI philosophy focuses on three core principles:

  1. Data-Driven Decision Making: Decisions about what to change and how well a change worked are based on objective data, not just opinion or intuition. This aligns with the quote: "In God we trust; all others bring data."
  2. People: CQI emphasizes teamwork, leadership, and the involvement of all employees in the improvement process.
  3. Process: The focus is on analyzing and improving the systematic processes within the organization, recognizing that most problems are due to faulty processes, not faulty people.

CQI in Practice

CQI is the systematic process of:

  1. Identifying, describing, and analyzing strengths and problems.
  2. Testing, implementing, learning from, and revising solutions.

It is often implemented using methodologies like Six Sigma, Lean, or Total Quality Management (TQM) Websites: Six Sigma,Lean, and Total Quality Management.

All of these methods emphasize leadership and employee involvement, processes analysis, and, most of all, teamwork.

Principles of Continuous Quality Improvement

Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) at WSUSOM

The Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM) has adopted Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), a framework derived from the eight principles of Total Quality Management (TQM).

CQI provides the systematic tools necessary for the School of Medicine to:

  • Enhance existing programs and services.
  • Improve effectiveness within the teaching-learning process.
  • Foster a collaborative work environment.
  • Tap the expertise of faculty, staff, and students across the organization.

The Foundation: Eight TQM Principles

CQI embodies the following TQM principles to ensure a comprehensive and effective approach to improvement:
